Recording internal audio, which is inside the software, in patterns or in the playlist, and recording external audio, outside the software. Let's suppose to record one or all the channels composing a pattern.

To choose which ones to record, simply turn off all channels you want to keep out. Now open the Mixer window using the quick buttons in the top right corner. The Master channel represents the whole output coming from the pattern shown by the Step Sequencer. Make sure to be in PAT mode checking below the player. Before recording, you can edit the output using the right side of the Mixer, adding effects or using Limiter and Compressor to improve its quality.

Recording is very easy. It right starts when you click on the record button in the Edison window. Nothing will be recorded if there is no output. You can see it through the columns on the right. Simply play the pattern interested and start recording. Don't mind about being precise. After recording enough, click again on the record button to stop.

The waveform of what recorded will be shown below. You can then use the buttons above to adjust it. To select a part of it, simply double-click to start selecting and drag on the left or right. Play often to check how it sounds.

You can enable loop through the loop button to keep on playing the selected part. Then use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out.

You will usually use this window just to cut parts of the waveform. This is the reason why you don't need to be precise while recording. To cut, simply select the part first and then click on the scissors button. Otherwise press CTRL+X. If you mistake you can use the undo button. When the track is OK, you need to export it. If you want to save it in your computer, click on the first icon and then go to Save Sample As.

Otherwise, if this track must be used in your project, use the last button in the list. This will export the whole waveform in the Playlist window, so in your whole project, as an aside pattern called Dragged Sample, or with the name given to the waveform if you saved it first. If you have any part selected, just this will be exported. If you need to record a part of the Playlist, the process is the same. The only thing that differs is to be in SONG mode instead of the PAT mode. Mind that, for each new recording, you need to clear the waveform graph everytime.

The new recordings are put right after the old ones. On top you have the main record button. This button doesn't record at first, but activates the record options right below the main graphs.

However, the Edison way and editing is much better and faster to use. Try using this button as well if you like. Let's see how to record external audio, for example a song that is outside FL Studio, or voices outside the computer. To do this the best, you need an ASIO device.

ASIO stays for Audio Stream Input/Output, used to connect directly an audio software with the computer sound card. You usually have it since it is included in the FL11 setup. In case you don't have it, you can simply download and install it for free searching ASIO in Google. Before recording, you need to adjust the audio settings.

Go to Options, and then to Audio Settings. As Input/Output you can choose the device that the software has to follow.

If you have Windows, this will be DirectSound. Choose an ASIO device from the list, for example ASIO4ALL. Then simply close the window. Now, observe the Mixer window. On the right, next to IN and OUT you can choose the source of the channel selected. Let's pick always the Master channel.

If IN has (none), it means that the input comes from FL Studio 11 only, without any extra sources. If you connect the computer to any microphone, this will be listed through the ASIO device. However this will be an extra source. You will hear in output both what comes from the FL Studio player and what from the microphone at the same time. If you want to hear just what comes from the microphone, make sure to have the player stopped. The same works for OUT. If you have other outputs, simply select them from the list.

This chooses the output, so where the sound must exit. So to record vocals, simply choose the Master channel, then a microphone in IN, and activate recording through the Edison window. Start speaking, and when you finish click again on the record button.

The voice will be shown as the recordings seen so far and can be edited and exported then. In similar ways you can import the sound from external instruments or keyboards, just remember to activate an ASIO device and choose the right input port connected to the instrument. The edit and export process will be the same as seen. Watch out when you are going to export after recording external audio.

To export fine, remember to deactivate ASIO devices through the Audio Settings. If you don't do this, ASIO devices will be used to export the track, that will result being muted. Choose the default settings you had, choosing your main audio driver first. Thanks for watching! Check our show to know all you need for FL Studio 11!
