I have installed Win 7 Ultimate on a machine that previously ran XP for years and had been totally stable. I am using the 64bit edition.After a random period of use (sometimes several hours) explorer starts crashing and although it nicely restarts itself, it keeps doing this every minute or two.

This issue was apparent on a fresh install with only windows installed.I have no idea what 'starts' this behaviour but once it has started, doing things like right-clicking somewhere, sorting columns in an explorer window or trying to launch the control panel all seem to regularly trigger a crash.Kinda makes me wish I had stuck with XP for a bit longer!There are many, many reports of similar behavior on Google (the fairly specific search string 'windows 7 64 bit explorer crash' brings up over 540,000 results) and many suggested 'solutions' but nothing definite.Any ideas from you guys? Click to expand.I too had the same IE problems when I first installed Win 7 64 bit RTM back in July last year - however, I soon discovered it was caused (in my case) by the Skype IE add-on. I disabled this in IE-tools-manage add ons, and I've had no problem since.

It sounds like your problem may be something different though, if you've run IE without add-ons!Have you performed Windows update, to get all the latest updates for IE? I'll investigate further but I only have 4 added context items: Faststone Viewer, WinRar, Quintessential Player and Steganos Shredder (part of Steganos Safe).The first three were added soon after Win 7 installation and also in RTM, so I think Steganos could be the culprit as that was added more recently. I'll have a look at that first. Maybe I'll add those one at a time to my other machine and see if it occurs there.However, if I remember to expand the drive first (that's a big if), it's not much of a problem anyway.
